The last Sunday in June is San Francisco’s day to celebrate the event known officially as the San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Celebration. Pride Day in the city began in 1970 when San Francisco along with New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles first marched to commemorate the first anniversary of the Stonewall Inn uprising in New York City; an event that gave an important impetus to the emerging gay liberation movement.
That first parade was small in scale. Today’s event hosts close to a million visitors with many travelling from countries spread across the globe. Because I was visiting in the bay area last June I was able to photograph the parade. Here are a few of those images.
