If you lived in Palo Alto, California during 1980 you should remember this image. It appeared overnight just a few days after December 8th, the day of John Lennon’ s tragic murder in the entryway of his New York City apartment. It appeared on the exterior wall of Liddicotts Grocery, corner of Hamilton and Bryant, downtown Palo Alto.

I never did learn who was responsible.  My guess would be that the building owner had given an okay as it is not your typical graffiti and most likely required the services of a cherry picker not, to mention a cooperative police department because of it’s prominent downtown location.

I offer my belated thanks to whoever came up with the idea and made it happen.  This simple message remained up for many months but was eventually removed  when a local restaurant  took over the property and remodeled the exterior of the building.

This message as well as the legacy of John Lennon remains, more important today than ever.
